Newsletter Topics: How to Identify Phishing with Actual Text Message Examples

👀 Today’s Focus: In last week’s newsletter (How to Identify Phishing with Actual Email Examples), we analyzed email phishing examples. In today’s edition, we delve into text phishing examples.

Example #1 - Netflix: Membership on Hold

Example #2 - Netflix: Payment Issues

🛑 Scammers love to target Netflix users, so rather than trying to figure out if a Netflix-related text is legitimate or a phishing attempt, delete it. To verify your billing or account securely, go straight to the source.

  • Go to the Netflix app on your device or Netflix.com on a Computer.

  • Go to the Account Settings and Billing Details as shown below.

Netflix: Access Billing Details

❗ Below are further instances that illustrate the same patterns:

  1. Odd sender

  2. Phishing links that don’t have the right company’s domain, such as: .amazon.com, .usps.com or .apple.com.

  3. An urgent call to action (ie - permanent suspension in 48 hours, update to deliver next day, prevent data loss)

Example #3 - Amazon, USPS & Apple

😎 Grandkid Tip of the Day:  To identify phishing text messages, stay alert to red flags:

  1. The Sender:

  2. Generic Message

  3. Phishing Links

  4. Sense of urgency that entices you to take action

⚠️ To address any account-related issues, consult the primary source. In the given examples, visit amazon.com or apple.com instead of depending on information provided in text messages.

⚠️ To address shipping-related issues, locate your tracking number and proceed directly to usps.com (or FedEx, DHL, UPS, etc.) to find the latest status of your delivery.
